roofing choices

now that i know that i want the outside of the house to be white, and the foundation will be covered in a rough stone, it is time to choose the roof shingles.

roof materials range in price and durability.
a material like slate will last for centuries, and is absolutely gorgeous, but the initial cost can be breathtaking.




wood shakes (cedar is used most commonly) are another popular roofing material. they offer great texture and character, and as the wood ages, the shingles shift into lovely grey color. however, without proper maintenance, wood shakes will not last as long as other roofing materials, and can also be susceptible to rot, insects and mold.



metal roofs are another great, but expensive choice. they are fire retardant, pretty much maintenance free, and are also very energy efficient.



most homes select ashphalt shingles (also called composition shingles). they are easy to install, rather low  maintenance, and come in a large selection of colors and styles.
we ended up choosing tamko heritage shingles:



i recently selected "weathered wood" shingles for a local exterior remodel project, and i was really pleased with the way they looked, but i wanted something a little more grey for my house. i thought about going with ""rustic black" or "black walnut", but ultimately decided on "thunderstorm grey".

they actually already put the shingles on! *they look great! i am a little behind in showing progress pictures, but will hopefully have some progress pictures up tomorrow!
