Ideas to Overhaul Your Small Garden (a guest post)

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 0 komentar
The Holiday season is over and even in the height of winter, thoughts turn to warmer weather and long days. Now is the perfect time to start planning your garden overhaul. Even the smallest of spaces can be made into a sanctuary with a little creativity and planning.

Get Rid of Ugly Walls – Walls, especially in a small garden, can be oppressive and create a ‘penned in’ feeling that is neither relaxing nor attractive. Paint brick walls in white paint to give an illusion of light and space, and line them with trellis from places like Buy Fencing Direct so creeping plants and flowers can cover the brickwork to visually extend your garden. If you have an artistic persuasion you can paint a mural onto a primed brick wall – a woodland scene on a far wall can work well to give the illusion of a longer garden.

Raised FlowerbedsRaised flowerbeds are neat and practical, as well as stylish. Small gardens typically suffer from the flowerbed ‘border’ where plants and flowers are restricted to the edges of the space and actually make the garden itself looks smaller. By taking your lawn right to the edges of your space, and keeping planting to a few strategically placed raised beds, you can make the most of your space and lead the eye through you garden instead of highlighting the edges and emphasising its small size.

Artwork – Works of art are not just for indoor walls and galleries. Garden art is on the rise and is perfect for a small garden where it is not going to be competing with extravagant flowerbeds and trees. Pebble mosaics make a perfect centrepiece for a paved yard, or create beautiful hanging art to dangle from wall brackets. If you choose reflective surfaces and glass to refract light, you can use your walls as a canvas to enhance the artwork. Garden art is easy to make yourself and there are hundreds of ideas on Pinterest to get you started.

In-built Furniture – In a small garden there often isn’t room for patio sets or garden furniture. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use your garden for entertaining and relaxing. Building different levels into your garden in the form of deep decked steps and recessed areas means that on a warm summer evening you can use scatter cushions and Mason jar candles to create ambient seating areas for entertaining.

$16 urn makeover

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 25 Juli 2013 0 komentar
i love a good urn, filled with plants and flowers spilling out over the edges...
in fact, i have a whole pinterest board dedicated to window boxes and containers, with lovely pictures like this:

my urns have been sitting empty for several months now. i usually fill them around mothers day, but things have been so hectic that i never got around to it. i finally decided that i needed a spot of color in the front of my house. the first order of business? sprucing up the urns a bit.

these urns are made of resin, which a LOT of planters and urns are made from these days. this is a great material because it is lightweight, and can mimic the look of cast iron and ceramic very well. my pots are supposed to look like cast iron, but over the last few years, they have started to wear down and the finish is coming off in some places. i found the perfect paint to make to help restore that cast iron look to my urns: a semi flat black spray paint. (i used the cheapest one i could find.) total cost per urn? $1. the semi flat paint has a very subtle sheen and does a great job of mimicking cast iron.

to fill the pots, i bought some potting soil ($5 per urn/$10 total), and went to lowes to see what they had. i will be honest....the selection was pretty slim. not at all like is is in late may or early june. however, i did manage to find some lavender ($5 per pot), and some mixed petunias (a bargain at $6 per  pot, considering how large they are). i usually like to mix at least 4 different kinds of flowers in my urns, and mix in some herbs as well, but i figured this year i would go a little more simple and affordable. i usually budget at least $50 just for flowers, and then the potting soil is another $10-15.

and here are my urns!

all spruced up an brimming with flowers! and all for $16 per urn, including the soil!

its small things like this that make my day happy. that, and a great song played really loud on my car radio can make me darn right cheerful!

oh, and in other happy news, our sod was delivered early this week!

to save some money, we laid it ourselves. it was dirty and tiring work, but certainly doable as a DIY project. the money that we saved helped us pay for our irrigation system. if you are on a tight budget and you are considering laying your own sod, i would say go for it!

it is amazing what a difference having grass makes! we are currently watering the fool out of it, and pampering it. new sod is kinda like having a puppy. it needs to be watched, fed, watered, and you can't turn your back on it or it might do something naughty. in this case, DIE.

its feeling less like a construction site and more like a home every week!

Clocks & Spring

"A little extra bubbly makes losing an hour a bit brighter" - Liily Pulitzer
Although we set the clocks forward tonight and lose an hour, it also means that spring is on the way and spring in DC is nothing shot of breathtaking. This is what is blooming in my own garden right now  - camellias in pink, red, and stripes, Japanese quince, and a huge variety of hellebores.

a day at thanksgiving point

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Jumat, 17 Agustus 2012 0 komentar
summer is winding down, i am trying to cram as much fun as i can into next 2 weeks.
the kids and i have spent a LOT of time at the pool this year, but we have also been on quite a few little adventures--(we try to do something "big" each week.)
earlier this week, we ventured to thanksgiving point...
for those of you who have never heard of thanksgiving point, it is a fun destination with a tons of things to do---it has a museum (one of the best in the state!), an imax theater, extensive gardens, a petting zoo, a golf course, an amphtheater, a great emporium, a cafe, ice cream parlor, several other restaurants, and more. there are summer camps available for kids, gourmet cooking classes,  floral arrangement  and gardening classes, numerous concerts, and during the holidays, they have a fantastic light display.
it kinda has UH--LOT of stuff to do.
it is located about 20 miles south of downtown slat lake city, and is almost
impossible to miss from the freeway!
here are some pics from our visit:

 (aren't these gorgeous??)

 loved the potted boxwoods too...

a peek at a corner of the HUGE gardens...

 LOVED these lanterns.

hmmm.
i should consider this a triumph....ONE of my THREE kids is actually looking at the camera and smiling. not a small feat.
(PS--my oldest daughter is now OFFICIALLY the same height as me! if i weighed 50 pounds less,
we could share clothes. i am sure she would be THRILLED about that! )

a look inside the emporium....this place has everything...home decor, an adorable toy and candy shop,
"made in utah" goodies, jewelry, clothing, bedding, bath products...

 loved this display!

after we strolled through the emporium, we stopped and got a bite to eat at the cafe:

we also MAY have ordered a few of these...

we had a great time! we will most likely go back later in the month before school starts...we wanted to see the museum, but it was SO crowded, so we are going to wait until a few other counties are back in school so that there will be fewer people.
i hope you enjoyed the mini-tour!

get out.

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Selasa, 05 Juni 2012 0 komentar
ahhh...it's officially summer.
yes, i know i mentioned that on friday, but with three kids, it's kinda a big deal.
no homework. no driving kids to and from school. no waking up at the crack of dawn. no emergency drives to the school for lunch money/forgotten gym clothes/missing homework/lost permission slips.
i really like summer!
one thing i am am looking forward to, besides spending more time with my kids, is eating outside. during the summer months, we eat outside as often as possible. (a much less humid and bug-fillled feat in the west than in the south!)
here are some outdoor spaces that make me want to spend the entire day outside...

casual, chic, traditional and streamlined.
LOVE.

*are you kidding me?
i could hang out here all day. ALL day.

i really love the large pot here. and that retaining wall is really beautiful.

*gorgeous.
i might be a little too practical for a gravel patio, but i love the way this looks anyway.
(i want to walk outside barefoot and curl up with a magazine and a glass of lemonade...gravel
patios would wart my toesies!)

how great would  it be to eat here??

this one is perfection.
i love the huge impact of this rather small space. it feels so private and cozy,
and ulta-elegant.

love this one too.  the wicker furniture is gorgeous paired with the stone floors and vine covered pergola.

love the details in this *simple pool cabana.

ahh. brick pavers and potted boxwood. right up my ally!

rustic elegance.
gorgeous herringbone pattern on the brick patio.
yeah, i know. this is definitely leaning towards the "elegance"....

totally in love this this as well. the outsdoor fireplace acts as a sculptural element, and the
entire scene is so inviting.

to see sources for the above images are on my pinterest board "outdoor living"
