design plans: 2 budget friendly toddler room schemes (and some tips on how to save money decorating)

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Senin, 11 November 2013 0 komentar
here are two schemes that i came up with for a client that was looking for a budget friendly way to redecorate her young daughters room.

lavender + citrine:

red + mint:

nearly all items on the boards come from sources like target, ikea, kirklands, and etsy....
because often it's not a matter of HOW much money you spend, but WHERE and HOW.

if you are getting ready to redecorate a room in your house, and will be spending hundreds or thousands of dollars, it is worth the investment to do some homework:

*look at sites like houzz and pinterest to get a better vision of what you like and want. it is a good idea to have a sense of your style before you begin any redecorating project.

*blogs (like mine!) or copy cat chic can give you ideas for less expensive look-alike alternatives for everything from lighting to sofas. be sure and check them out to see if something that you have your eye on is available somewhere else for less! i have a board on pinterest called "affordable finds" that you may want to take a peek at!

*get familiar with what is available online at big box stores like target, overstock, jcpenny and even walmart. there can be treasures "hidden"in all that STUFF.

*do some preliminary budgeting so that you know what you could end up paying for things.

if all else fails, and you feel overwhelmed, hire a DESIGNER! they can end up saving you a lot of money by coming up with options that fit your budget and can open your eyes to other ways to improve your space!

design plan(s): modern boys room

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 23 Mei 2013 0 komentar
i recently completed a full room design for a little man about the same age as my son. as part of the design process, i talked to him and asked him what he liked to do, and what colors he wanted to see in his new room. i was pleasantly surprised at how sophisticated his design sense was! he requested that his room be modern and that it for sure include some green. when i further quizzed him on what shades of green he liked, it wasn't "the hulk" green, like i thought it might be, but more chartreuse.
sign me up! i love yellowy-greens!

i came up with two options for him:

or course i gave him the option to mix and match things from the different options, and let me know what else he wanted in the room....
his mom sent me a picture of both design boards, with the items that he liked best circled!
it was pretty darn cute:
(so cute that i had to upload it to instagram.)

here is a look at the FINAL design plan:

e-design plan: boys bathroom

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 19 Juli 2012 0 komentar

a look at the idea board for the design plan of a bathroom that i recently worked on. my client's upstairs bathroom is in dire need of some updating....they wanted something timeless and elegant, since it will be the bathroom used for guest, but also needed the bathroom to have some color and whimsy, since it will mostly be used for their two boys. (the husband and wife have different styles--she likes more modern and simple lines, and he likes things a little more ornate. the vanity has the clean lines for her, and the mirrors add some curves for him.)

on the menu:
herringbone carrara marble floors, a running bond pattern on the walls, a dark wood vanity cabinet, hexagonal tile inset into custom shelving in the shower/tub area, roman shades in a graphic navy and green fabric, soft blue walls, and a color blocked linen shower curtain. it will be a fun and sophisticated space when it is all done!

below are a few of the mock-ups that i pulled together to help my client decide which direction to
take for the mirror and the vanity lighting:

here is a look at the window fabric and shower curtain trim and linen:
the fabric is a spoonflower fabric, the linen is from gray line linen, and the ribbon is from ribbon connections.
this bathroom remodel is about get underway, and i will make sure my client sends me pictures of the completed room! i am really looking forward to seeing how it all looks once it is pulled together.

stuff on the wall

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Jumat, 11 Mei 2012 0 komentar
well yay for me!
we have been in this house for just over 8 months, and i finally have a few things hung on grady's wall:

exhibit a:
the "g" from print collection that i picked up from the framers last week.

exhibit b:
the rhino head from cardboard safari, hung on top of a picture of grady's 18 month old feet
in the sand. i think every mother has a secret favorite photo of each of their kids...and this is my favorite of my little man. even though it doesn't even show his face, looking at this picture always takes me back to the exact instant that i took this picture on the shores of lake tahoe in 2005. i LOVE that you can see just a peek of his diaper in the picture. yes...he was in a diaper at the beach. totally redneck, i know, but that's the way we roll sometimes.

exhibit c:
i decided to rehang the vintage license plates i had up in his last bedroom. they represent where my husband (alabama), me (i  was born in georgia, but grew up in ohio), and my son (tennessee) are from.
i love using vintage items in kids spaces. i think add a sense of history and charm. plus, vintage stuff is already all dinged up, so when the  kids ding it up even more, it just adds to it's "character".
it's a win win situation.

phew.
i think i am worn out from the hanging of all that STUFF.
i may need to take a 4 or 5 month break before i attempt any other project around my house....yah. that was a joke, but it will probably become a reality.
happy weekend friends!

grady's room-a few last details

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Senin, 16 April 2012 0 komentar
i am still making s-l-o-w progress on grady's room...i still need to decorate the walls, and have a pillow made with this fabric.

i bought the brooklyn bridge pillow cases before we moved, and FINALLY found them while digging through the garage on saturday. (isn't that sad?? ugh. i hate being so disorganized!)
i am going to attempt to put together the rhino head from cardboard safari this week sometime and MAY or may not hang it. (still waiting for my "g" to bet back from the framers)
when i finally get some stuff up on the walls, i will take a picture to share!

e-design update: tween hangout space

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Selasa, 13 Maret 2012 0 komentar
it literally feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r ago when i first posted about this tween hangout space!
i started on this project nearly two years ago...it was one of the first e-design projects i worked on.
this space was designed as a muti-function room, perfect for a sleepover, don't you think?
--there is a lounge area,(complete with entrainment center and big screen tv...sorry i didn't get a shot of that wall for you!) a huge toy closet, a desk area, a stage area, and a bathroom.

this client happens to live in my former hometown of  knoxville, tennessee,  so when i went back to visit two weeks ago, i made an appointment to stop by and check our our handiwork and take some pictures to share with you!

as you may recall, this was once an unfinished attic space that was transformed into a hangout space for two tween girls. to see progress pictures, click here.
here is the nearly finished room. (i say nearly finished because there are still a few minor details left to work on)
(sorry about the crazy light spots on the pictures--there is actually a lighted disco ball in the ceiling (that you can't see in the pictures), and it casts these fun light spots everywhere...)

the wall color is : gossamer blue by benjamin moore
the darker niche is painted: wilmington spruce by benjamin moore

all of the fabrics are from premier prints, and cost less than $10 a yard.

here, on the "stage" area, we painted the walls a nice grey-black--benjamin moore's "black jack".
the dark wall color helps to create the focus on the star of the stage, and also disguises the odd angles
in the walls and ceilings. the window casings are also painted black to help them blend in with the wallpaper.

the "whiling dervish" wallpaper was purchased at anthropologie (no longer available), and is also installed on the power room ceiling. the wallpaper was the inspiration for the color scheme of the entire space.
the stripes were a particularly fun part of the design for me. i was SO glad my client went along with my idea to paint that may stripes in THAT many colors!

we swapped out the plain knobs on the mirrored vanity for some fun turquoise ones.
the floors are a hexagonal marble tile with black grout.

you may also notice that the window casings around the hexagonal window were painted the same color as the large stripe---again, this was done to help the  window blend in with the walls.

the desk area---we installed a faux roman shade with polka dot grosgrain ribbon on the sides, and a black pom pom trim on the bottom.

here is the originally design board for the bathroom:

and finally, a detail of the painted stripes for the bathroom wall.

isn't it fun to see the design boards and then see the translation of those ideas in a REAL room?
i think so.....i LOVE what i do!

design plan: boys bedroom

in honor of presidents day, i wanted to share a design plan that i completed for a pre-teen boy who loves
baseball, collecting coins, and all things related to the president of the united states.
his room was part of a new addition to the house, and was a clean slate for me and my client to create a space for a growing boy to not only sleep, but socialize with friends, study and hone his collecting skills.

i will be taking new clients in the middle of march. email me with questions about rates,

"exploding death star" chandelier

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Selasa, 31 Januari 2012 0 komentar
even though we are living in a rental house, one thing i really wanted to change about grady's room
was the existing ceiling fan. it was SO unattractive, and not fitting for a kids space.
i wanted something with a little more personality. i know--MORE personality than a ceiling fan? not hard to do, right?
since most of the items in his room have a traditional feel to them, i wanted
a light fixture that was a little more modern and whimsical.
my little man LOVES legos, and in particular, star wars legos. so, when i spotted the
orbit chandelier from z gallerie, i knew i had found the perfect light for his room.

this past weekend, i picked it up at the store, brought it home and begged my husband to install it:
grady's eyes lit up when the last bulb was in place, and when we flicked on the switch,
he grinned from ear to ear, and said "it looks like like an exploding death star!"

what a BOY.
:)
and, on a side note--i finally hung one thing on the wall...the cork board map!
yay!

design plan: shared nursery

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Rabu, 07 Desember 2011 0 komentar
i thought i would share the design plan for a shared nursery that i completed. my client recently had a baby boy, and already has a toddler son. she wanted to update his room to accommodate the new baby, and add some color and personality. the walls will be painted a soft blue, and a graphic rug in a dark chocolate brown will ground the space. accents in kelly green, orange, red and blue will add additional color, while fun accents like a map covered lampshade and a driftwood mirror will add texture and whimsy.

i will be taking new clients for full room designs after january 9th, but i can fit in a phone consultation anytime.

design plan: "growing up" boys room

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Rabu, 06 Juli 2011 0 komentar
no matter how hard we mommy's want to put it off....it's inevitable.
our little baby boys grow into toddlers, and our toddlers turn into full blown little boys.
(ack---it happens so fast. i swear my little man was JUST screaming "fa--FO!" ("backhoe")
at every yellow construction vehicle that drove by. now he is playing lego games on the wii
and reading chapter books! *sigh)
my client is a mom was looking to update her little boys room into something more fitting
for his age. he currently has a light green, light blue blue and red theme in his room, with some
red bedding with white stars that needed to stay. i added doses of grey, black
tan, wood, and metal to give the red a more grown-up, transitional feel.
here is the plan for the room transformation:

here is how the room currently looks:
as a courtesy to my clients, i do not list sources for my design plans online...however,
if you are interested in a particular item please feel free to email me.
