college dorm room schemes + design board

a friend of mine recently asked for some help in pulling together some bedding ideas for her daughter, who will be starting college in utah this fall. she mentioned that she was looking at some options at pottery barn teen, and i immediately stopped her and told her she was about to make a terrible mistake. (you can say mean things like that to a friend....i would have said the same thing to a client, but in a more professional and "nice" way!)

hey, nothing wrong with pb teen. i actually love pb teen, but taking an entire bedding ensemble from their collection can look a little juvenile--especially for a college student. their girl bedding tends to be bright, and more "clear" colors, which aren't as sophisticated as more muted tones.

for instance, yellow is a great color, but at full intensity (think big bird), and mixed with a hot pink AND a dose of turquoise, it can get bad.

(imagine mimi from the drew carey show... as a bedroom. yeah, YIKES.)

now, take that same yellow, but add some gray and brown to it, and you get a muted, pretty mustard color that will mix well with dusty blues, deep plum, lavender, and ALL kinds of neutrals. the palette can still be youthful, but in a controlled and sophisticated way.

here are a few color schemes that i came up with using a few of my go-to places for tween/teen/young adult bedding items: urban outfitters, west elm, etsy, and serena and lily.

so, which one did she end up choosing?
she chose the "dusty blue + black/white" option, and we ended up throwing in some green for an additional dose of color:

Another Easy Chinoiserie DIY

In the room above from House Beautiful, Tom Scheerer frames family photos in red bamboo frames. Below, Tobi Fairley pairs classical art in red frames with Chinese lanterns and lamps and a Greek key bordered rug. I love this look of Chinese red picture frames. My go to cheap frame - Ikea's Ribba comes in high gloss red starting at $1.99. The 11 3/4" by 15 3/4" is $9.99 and is matted for 8" by 10" photos and art - a great size for lots of projects. new favorite thing: double tension shower rod

ok.
first of all, let me just state that--NO, gradys bathroom has NOT been painted yet.
i have thought about it at least 355 times since june, but i still have not taken the plunge.
this is due, in part, to me trying to spend as much time as possible with the kids before they went back to school (yesterday was the first day!). the other part is just sheer laziness. i just haven't made it a priority!

that being said, i am making p-r-o-g-r-e-s-s.
everything EXCEPT the paint is ready to go.
i shared my new design plan of this bathroom here, and one of the things i decided was that i wanted two separate, decorative shower curtains. i looked online to see if i could find a nice looking, double shower rod, and spotted one at bed bath and beyond.

i was going to order it online, but i decided to swing by my local store instead. luckily, they have one in stock, and so i brought it home and tried it out.

i am in love with this! it was really easy to install---it just went up like a normal tension rod. i actually think it was a tad easier because it was larger, and easier to keep lined up in the same place on both sides.

i placed mine right at the top of the shower tile.

because the decorative panels have grommets tops, i did have to thread them onto the rod before tightening it into place. i put the rings for the curtain liner on after the rod was up.

because my panels are 84" long, i purchased an extra long (84") liner. i purchased this hotel fabric one because i want it to last for a long time, and want the option of washing it.

here it is!
i love that the shower is still totally functional, but the shower liner is hidden. i LOVE being able to see the tile in the shower, and feel that having the opening between the panels helps make the bathroom feel a little bigger.
*oh, and see??---the paint and all the supplies are just sitting patiently on the floor, waiting for me to get started. and i will. someday.

Easy Chinoiserie DIY

I am not a big DIY type, probably because I am a perfectionist and prefer to hire experts to do things better than I can, but I do love easy DIY projects. I have collected several I would like to try myself and thought I would share some with you over the next few days. I love this vignette by Thomas Jayne with its gorgeous Gracie Chinoiserie wallpaper and the pale blue Parsons desk edged in gold. I found this great blue Parsons desk on Home Decorators Collection for $199. It is made of wood too! It also comes in a file cabinet and bookcase. I think the gold edging could be done with one of my beloved Krylon 18 Kt. Gold Leafing pens or gold paint and a tiny brush. Find the desk here.

The Steps you Need to Build Your Own Home

Your home is the most important place in the world to you, and this is a place in which you will relax, unwind, socialise, eat, sleep, have fun and perhaps bring up a family, so it needs to be perfect. There are few things more satisfying in life than building your own home, and it also brings a lot of benefits too. This will give you an enormous amount of satisfaction and pride, and once it’s completed you will have an attachment to it that not many people get to feel towards their house. Of course building your home is no simple and straightforward process, and there is an enormous amount of planning, preparation, construction and plenty more to do.

The very beginning stages will involve finding a suitable location and having the blueprint designed, and this can be done with the help of an architect or engineer. You will be able to discuss with them your needs like the number of bedrooms and the layout, and they will then be able to take this information and come up with a suitable design. With the design and location arranged the next stages involve having the property surveyed and the footprint of the house identified, and you will then need to acquire the relevant permits for construction to begin. These permits will include a building permit and possibly a septic tank permit, electrical permit, plumbing permit and a mechanical permit, and this will all depend on local codes and zoning requirements.

Starting the Construction Work

That is all of the preparation taken care of, and now you can move onto the physical work. With the construction there is a large amount where you will probably want to use a trained professional, but there may be a fair amount that you can do yourself as well. A few of the trades that will be involved in the building of a home include site work, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, insulators, painters, flooring installers and heating, ventilation and air conditioning installers amongst a few others.

With the building there will be an enormous amount of machinery and equipment that will be needed, and even if you seek the services of a professional you may need to provide this for them. This will include machinery like excavators and other construction machines, and for large items like this you will need to visit a specialist provider, Scot JCB being an example. The construction process will be a long and no doubt stressful one, but it will also be hugely exciting and satisfying too, and once you are completely finished you will have your brand new home which you designed and built, and there is no feeling in the world quite like this one.
