HomeGoods, Football, and Chinoiserie

Ming Circus Football
I hope everybody had a great weekend. Mine was fun. On Saturday morning, I had this feeling I should head off to HomeGoods even though it was pouring rain. When I got there, I instinctively headed to the furniture section and spotted a beautiful silver faux bois bar cart for $179.99. I wheeled it up to the cash register and the check out person was on the phone with a woman who had seen it at closing the night before and wanted it. The one thing I have learned about HomeGoods is to grab it. It probably won't be there if you go back. Pictures of it in my dressing room are below. It is just hanging out there temporarily - it's permanent home will be in the Chinoiserie Man Cave that I am planning for my husband. Every man cave needs a bar, right?

Speaking of man caves, after finding that, I took the rest of the weekend off and watched all four football games. Did you watch any football? I thought we would take a peek at football and Chinoiserie. I created these three hand-painted silk Chinoiserie football wallpapers for last year's Super Bowl post and nobody got it. Everybody was pinning them to their Chinoiserie Pinterest boards. So I thought I would try posting them again!

Also below is a photo of the bedroom Linda at Calling It Home did for a past One Room Challenge that had lots of great Chinoiserie. What cracked me up was that when I was looking for photos for this post, I found that somebody pinned it and put this comment -

Loverly that dresser. Not so into football and baseball books.

They actually took the time to read the book jackets and diss them.

This week will be the wrap-up and finale of my series on the Top Ten Chinoiserie Trends for 2014.

Brown Background Wallpaper

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Minggu, 27 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

I won on eBay 10 unopened rolls of this beautiful Dorothy Draper & Company wallpaper called Birch Trees Brown. The labels say it is "A Carleton Varney Rose Cottage Design 1996." The 10 rolls were $65.00 including shipping. Crazy cheap. I had saved these pictures of rooms with brown background wallpapers that I really liked. I thought my wallpaper would be great in my downstairs hallway that does not have much natural light, but has lots of crisp white doors and woodwork. My paper reminds me a bit of this by Tom Scheerer room below although mine is obviously on a smaller scale. I am going to call my wallpaper hanger to get on his schedule and I will take some before and after shots. I'll be on the lookout for a mirror too. This wallpaper will be a change for me as all my other wallpapers have a white or off white ground.

Chinoiserie Then and Now and Mystery Wallpaper Solved

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Minggu, 13 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

This bedroom is in the Governor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, circa 1722.  So much strikes me as relevant and even trending today -

*Toile
*Scallops
*Purple
*A flat weave patterned rug
*Green
*Checks
*Painted Chinese Chippendale Chairs
* The combination of purple and green
*White linens

These modern versions of purple and green Chinoiserie rooms below seem somewhat less bold when viewed against this, right?

An interior designer emailed me trying to identify this Chinoiserie wallpaper for a client. It may be discontinued. Can any of you help?

Update - I have the best followers. This is Brunschwig & Fils La Danse, still available as fabric but apparently no longer in wallpaper. Thanks so much Meg.

battle of the wallpapers--opinions needed!

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Jumat, 11 Oktober 2013 0 komentar
remember my teeny tiny vestibule?

well, i am having an enormously hard time deciding which wallpaper to put in the space.

what i want:
something neutral, that introduces some texture and or pattern that will look nice with the ornate mirror.

here are the top contenders:

option A:
phillip jeffries grasscloth with a chain link stencil applied on top.

the good:
it will be really affordable.
let me clarify! because if you have ever looked at the pricing of philip jeffries wall coverings, you know it is pretty expensive. i purchased a small remnant of plain phillip jeffries grasscloth on ebay a few months ago for $50 to use on the ceiling of my powder room, but it is enough to cover this space as well. i also already have the stencil, although the scale of the links is larger than in the actual wallpaper.
the texture will be nice in the small space, and the link pattern will be a nice contrast to the ornate mirror.
the bad:
i have to stencil the grasscloth, which could be a pain in the butt. i might end up ruining it.
i have never hung grasscloth, so i would have to spend some time researching the right way to hang it. i might end up ruining it. can you tell that i am a little afraid to RUIN it?

option B:
fornasetti malachite wallpaper in beige, cole + sons.

the good:
its a gorgeous wallpaper that i have had my eye on forever. it would be a subtle, chic look in this tiny space. it has a slight metallic sheen to it which is really dreamy.

the bad:
i would have to buy it, and most places have a 2 roll minimum, even through i only need one roll.  a single roll is around $150.
maybe it is too subtle for this area? i could also use this paper somewhere else in my house, like on the ceiling in either my office or the foyer.

option C:
thibaut alexander wallpaper in metallic pewter on beige

the good:
its a great combination of texture and grahic pattern, plus it is a little traditional and a little modern at the same time.

the bad:
uh...close to $400. just to cover this one little area. a definite splurge.

option D:
farrow and ball ranelagh

the good:
this is a very classic, nice looking wallpaper with a soft graphic trellis motif. i can get it for a pretty affordable price. it would look nice against my scrolly white mirror.

the bad:
it may not be as "exciting" or design forward as the other choices.

ACK!
so, what should i do?

go with option A, the affordable, possible-train-wreck in the making diy stencil on the grasscloth?
or splurge on B or C?
or go with budget friendly option D?

here are the choices again:

help!!
what do you think?

Hand - painted Chinoiserie wallpaper in orange is so dramatic and works with traditional or modern furnishings. Perfect for the lover of Hermes, autumn, or Halloween, but orange has really gone mainstream.
